What drives the purchase price a breeder sets?

Below I have outlined just a few of the factors that go into the purchase price of a Chekrdflags Newfoundland or Great Pyrenees.  These costs are PER Dog.

General Care of Sire and/or Dam:

o        Food - $20/week  $1040/year
o        Vet Visits - $100 - $200 Annually
o        Health Products - Flea prevention, Heartworm Prevention, etc. - $200 Annually
·                Showing
o        Entry Fees - $20.00 - $28.00/show
o        Grooming supplies / equipment – Avg. $200.00 yearly
o        Shows needed to complete a Championship - 5 to 10
o        Show expenses - travel, meals, lodging,gas - $100-$300/show
o        Annual National Specialty - $800 - $1,800
·                Health Clearances
OFA
o        Hips - $100-$170 for X-Ray, $30.00 for certification
o        Elbows - $80-$10 for X-Ray
o        Patella - $30.00 for exam
o        Thyroid - $70-$100 for bloodwork and certification
o        Cardiac - $50-$120 for exam and certification
CERF (Eyes)
o        $25.00 - $50.00 for exam
o        $12.50 - $8.00 for certification
o        Test done every two years
General Blood Panel
o        $70.00 - $100.00 for blood drawn and tested
o        Testing done annually
·                Breeding Costs
           o            Progesterone testing - $65.00 per test, 2 test minimum
o        Stud Fees - $1500.00 - $2,500.00
o        Shipping costs - $300.00 - $800.00
o        Artificial Insemination - $120.00 - $1,200.00 (depending on if fresh or frozen)
·                Pre-Natal Care
             o         Ultrasound to confirm pregnancy - $70.00 - $90.00
o        Higher consumption of diet - $75.00
o        Pre-Delivery Radiograph - $70.00 - $100.00
·                Puppy Care given prior to going to new homes
o        Physical Exams - $60.00
o        Vaccines - $30.00
o        Check for Internal Parasites - $20.00
o        Eye Exam - $40.00
o        Microchip Implant - $50.00
·                Time, Services and other factors
o        Socialization of puppies
o        Crate Training of puppies
o        Leash Training and Basic Obedience
o        Temperament Testing
o        Pedigree Research
o        Interviewing Prospective Homes
o        Small Litter Size
o        Unexpected Emergencies (C-Sections, Complicated Deliveries, etc.)
 
These are just a few of the things that go into the purchase price of a puppy.  Another thing to keep in mind, 
the purchase price may be one of the largest one-time expenses, but it is miniscule in the overall cost of care
for the lifetime of a animal that you ask to share its life with you.   When you breed Right, you make No money.
